Scientific Computing and Software Development Services
A principle component of ADACS is the provision of expertise for the design and development of software tools and infrastructure. Within Q3-Q4 2017, ADACS will offer the first merit-based allocation of professional software development and data management services. This service aims to support small-to-intermediate scale tools/platforms. As a pilot, this service will be limited to the equivalent of one full-time computational scientist. A diversely qualified team will participate, with expertise covering a variety of areas including (but not limited to): System Analysis and Design, Scientific Computing, High-performance Computing, Data Science, Web Development, Large-scale Scientific Databases, Cloud Computing and Scientific Visualisation.
Astronomers will have access to this service via the Astronomy Supercomputing Time Allocation Committee (ASTAC) .
Collaboration with the Virtual Observatory Projects
ADACS will Work with AAL and the All-Sky Virtual Observatory (ASVO) nodes (and potentially other Australian VO projects) to improve the integration between the nodes. This includes working with the ASVO nodes to facilitate: shared authentication/access protocols, shared back-end VO services, and consistent user interfaces.
The ASVO coordinator role, hosted by ADACS, will develop a strategy and an action plan for the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project management office, consult with the community and the ASVO nodes to build priorities, and interface with the Australian and International VO communities. The ASVO Coordinator will also support AAL in their effort to attract more funding to the ASVO project.
Additionally, ADACS will develop the first version of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) ASVO node. This node will provide access to the raw data from the Murchison Widefield Array. The ASVO-MWA node will develop the infrastructure and expertise required to provide raw and processed MWA data to astronomers both inside and outside of the MWA collaboration. The data processing that is provided will consist of: format conversion, averaging, flagging, joining of multiple data sets, and selection of subsets, but not calibration or imaging. The ASVO-MWA will provide a staging area to facilitate the (re-)processing of data (preferably located at Pawsey: keeping processing with the data), and the ability to transfer data or metadata to data stores such as RDS or the NeCTAR Cloud. We expect a pilot deployment of the node by the end of 2017.
gSTAR Data Management and Collaboration Platform (gDMCP)
We will capitalise on the gSTAR Data Management and Collaboration Platform (gDMCP) to improve access to efficient and advanced data services. gDMCP will provide the necessary support to port datasets of national interest and to facilitate community in-take. ADACS will improve this service by working with the astronomy community to identify the datasets of national interest (nationally and internationally) and providing the necessary infrastructure and support to host these datasets.
